When you begin operating a home business there are some definite things you want to remember for tax purposes. These can make a huge difference in your taxes at the end of the year and save you a lot of money.

- All receipts to show what your costs are. Anything you buy that is directly related to your business. Anything you buy to carry on a business, this includes paper, printer ink, folders, pens, pencils, supplies to make your goods if you are making items. All receipts for gas you spend driving in relation to your business. If you drive to drop off goods or go to the post office or a UPS or FedEx store. Any and all receipts that have any relation to your business. These will be needed when you do your taxes, so that you can write off these expenses. Even if they do not seem important, they may be. Keeping them will save you time and money, versus not having them and not being able to receive the tax break.

- Every bill and invoice you have received or sent out. Any bills you receive from vendors for products you have purchased. Also, the invoices you have sent out to stores, companies, or individuals. You will want to have all of these again, so that at tax time you can show your costs and what you have made and be able to write the costs and expenses off.

- All utility bills. You can right off the costs of your utility bills for the time they are used while you are working. Power, gas, water, and even sewer and garbage can be used as a write off in relation to your business. You will need to document the time you are using the utilities so that it can be broken down and separated from your regular home usage.

- The square footage of your home. The space you use for your home business can be written of as well. You will want to keep these numbers so that you know what space you are using and be able to use that as an operating cost as well. You will need to know your homes value and the amount of space you are using and how often. But it is well worth it to gather this information and have it ready for tax time.

- Stay organized and keep records of everything. The more organized you are the simpler your life will be also. You want to keep everything so that if there are any problems or any questions arise you can find what you need immediately. You never want to be searching for what you need and wasting countless hours and time.

- Make sure you research your market and your customer's needs and wants. As you begin selling your goods and services, keep track of what sells and what does not. Check with friends and family for feedback on what to make or sell. Or what to change in your inventory. Knowing what is working and what is not will save you time and you will have a better chance at having a successful home business.
